What is the greatest division between America and Europe? You might think it is over attitudes to food or sport, policy towards China or something about the guardrails needed for capitalism. Not a bit of it. The biggest split is over cars. Americans expect to drive huge ones, ideally something that has the heft and noise of an elephant. Europeans are far likelier to opt for smaller beasts. When an American friend once visited, renting a stylish but tiny Fiat 500 at the airport, his teenage daughter was mortified, announcing it was obviously a toy vehicle and not fit for the road.
 
Admittedly, Europeans are also driving bigger cars than they used to

         Is this the week a ceasefire is declared in Ukraine? Just possibly. Ukraine&rsquo;s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, will be in Saudi Arabia in the coming days, as Ukrainian and American delegations meet in Jeddah. That offers 
          <a   data-linkto="https://" href="https://click.e.economist.com/?qs=03962abcc628b2d25d5e07f99963c90318a51b3b176cba72a32369498d4b9fdc45788deae1bf97178bf76e079a2ccdc086a1d0af01285ef940df418e18ba8f3e" style="text-decoration:none;" title="a chance for more productive talks">a chance for more productive talks</a> 
          after the fiasco in the White House just over a week ago. Donald Trump is piling pressure on Ukraine&mdash;cutting off military and intelligence help, trying to compel the victim of Russia&rsquo;s aggression to come to terms. For the first time, too, Mr Trump has at least made some vague threats towards Vladimir Putin, suggesting America could impose more sanctions on Russia. Mr Putin, so far, sounds unimpressed. Successive Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent days show that Russia&rsquo;s president is sticking to his criminal method of attacking civilians to put pressure on the invaded country.<br>
         <br>
         Both Ukraine and Russia could benefit from a pause. The death toll for Russian soldiers is gobsmacking and grim. By one estimate some 100,000 Russian soldiers were killed in Ukraine in 2024 alone, having gained a pathetically small patch of extra territory in exchange for their blood. (Read our article on

          Mr Putin has an iron grip on his own country, so doesn&rsquo;t worry about a backlash for condemning so many young men to death. But even he may grasp that the war of attrition, as currently fought, is pointless and costly.&nbsp;<br>
         <br>
         Similarly, for Ukraine, a ceasefire could appeal. The conflict has had a dire impact on soldiers and civilians alike. It is just possible, too, that Ukraine&rsquo;s front lines could suddenly buckle and collapse in the face of Russian attacks. The worry for Mr Zelensky, however, is that a pause in fighting will favour Russia in the long term. He knows America could use any ceasefire as an excuse to walk away. If Europe is unable to provide convincing security guarantees to fill the gap, then a pause would be merely a prelude to the next Russian attack.<br>
         <br>
         Cheer on Europeans, notably Germany under its incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz, for becoming more serious about increasing spending on defence. Germany, it seems, will at last start borrowing more for the sake of spending on infrastructure and building up its military capacity. France may follow. We published

         Finally, many thanks for your responses to my comments, a week ago, on the showdown in the White House. Many of you agreed that the bullying by J.D. Vance and Donald Trump was unedifying. But you generally disliked that I called Volodymyr Zelensky &ldquo;foolish&rdquo; for letting the two Americans provoke him into anger of his own. I&rsquo;ll quote just a few of you. <b>Patricia Patterson</b>, in New York, said the Ukrainian &ldquo;lost nothing&rdquo; by pushing back. <b>Gerald Lema</b> welcomed the confrontation, even though it was an &ldquo;embarrassing spectacle&rdquo;, because it shattered any illusions Europeans might have previously had about America&rsquo;s stance. Similarly <b>Jean Allard
</b>, in Ohio, praised Mr Zelensky because he &ldquo;exposed&rdquo; Mr Trump to the world. <b>Caroline Israel</b> argued the confrontation was a set-up, and there was nothing Mr Zelensky could have done to avoid it.&nbsp;<br>

         I stand by my own assessment that Mr Zelensky didn&rsquo;t help his cause a week ago. The events of the past few days, not least the sight of Mr Zelensky offering contrition and vowing to listen afresh to Mr Trump, suggest the Ukrainian himself now judges that he blundered.
