 with Ahmed al-Sharaa since he assumed Syria&rsquo;s presidency last week. It was far from clear that Mr Sharaa&rsquo;s jihadist worldview is behind him. Though he promised presidential elections, he also decried America&rsquo;s &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; military presence in Syria and welcomed negotiations with Russia. Mr Sharaa talked about religious and ethnic inclusivity, but he still has a lot to prove.

Meanwhile Mexico&rsquo;s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, made the surprising announcement that Donald Trump will delay the imposition of 25% levies on exports from her country. But tariffs on Canada and China are still scheduled to go ahead on Tuesday. Europe may be
